Reading & Vocabulary Program (Grade 1-4)

From Understanding a Text to Building True Language Mastery.

The Q-Learning Reading & Vocabulary Program is a systematic English language curriculum designed for elementary and junior high school students. Strictly aligned with the Ontario Language Curriculum and EQAO reading and writing standards, this program expands on school learning through leveled reading, systematic vocabulary acquisition, textual analysis, and language production—helping students build a solid, sustainable foundation in English.

Our goal goes beyond answering individual comprehension questions. We empower children to develop long-term core capabilities:

Read accurately, comprehend deeply, build rich vocabulary, think critically, and express confidently.

A Comprehensive System for Language Mastery

Our curriculum utilizes top-tier leveled reading resources—including Wonders, WonderSkills, and Raz-Kids—complemented by curated literary works, non-fiction texts, and Qilu Academy's proprietary materials in vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension.

Students of different grade levels and reading proficiencies are placed into tailored learning stages. As they progress, they encounter longer passages, more advanced vocabulary, greater text complexity, and deeper analytical demands.

Rather than page-by-page textbook coverage, our instruction builds a complete learning pathway across four core pillars:
Reading Comprehension × Vocabulary Building × Critical Thinking × Language Expression

We guide students step-by-step from recognizing English words to understanding texts, analyzing content, and expressing original ideas in their own words.

Reading | From "Decoding" to "Deep Understanding"

True reading ability extends far beyond recognizing individual words.

In our program, students learn to identify core content, extract key information, analyze characters and plots, and recognize text structures. They master essential reading skills, including: Main Idea, Supporting Details, Sequence, Cause & Effect, Compare & Contrast, Inference, Author’s Purpose, Point of View

As grade levels advance, students explore deeper textual questions:
Why did the author structure the text this way?
Which evidence supports this claim?
Which statements are facts, and which are opinions?
What are the underlying motivations behind a character’s actions?
How do two different texts compare and connect?
How do I form my own position based on textual evidence?

Students move from asking "What does the text say?" to "What does the text mean?", and ultimately "What do I think about it, and why?"

It is the key step from foundational to advanced reading.

Vocabulary | Turning Words into Active Tools

We avoid memorizing isolated word lists.

Vocabulary instruction takes place within authentic texts and contexts, enabling students to deduce meanings naturally and learn correct usage patterns.

Our systematic training covers:
Context Clues: Inferring meanings from context
Word Families: Morphology and word form variations
Prefixes & Suffixes: Structural word analysis
Synonyms & Antonyms: Expanding precision in word choice
Multiple-Meaning Words: Polysemy in varied contexts
Academic Vocabulary: High-frequency Tier 2 & Tier 3 terms
Vocabulary in Writing: Practical application in sentences

Students learn not just what a word means, but
when to use it, how it differs from similar words, and how to apply it in their own writing

Our target is to transform Passive Vocabulary (recognition) into Active Vocabulary (spontaneous use)

Thinking | Reading as Cognitive Training

As students progress, the gap in English proficiency is rarely driven by vocabulary size alone; it depends on their ability to analyze, summarize, and form reasoned opinions.

Critical thinking is integrated throughout every reading module:

Student will learn:
Predict
Compare
Summarize
Infer
Analyze
Evaluate
Support with Evidence

Instructors go beyond asking for the correct answer, prompting students with:
How do you know?
What evidence can you find?
Why do you think so?

This builds the habit of structuring thoughts around Idea + Reason + Textual Evidence, establishing a strong foundation for advanced reading, writing, EQAO assessments, and future high school academic coursework.

Expression | Translating Reading into Output

Reading is input; expression is output.

Every module extends beyond multiple-choice questions. Through oral discussions, sentence construction, summaries, short responses, and opinion pieces, students reframe and apply the vocabulary, sentence structures, and ideas they have learned.

Students advance through structured expression milestones:
Express opinions in complete sentences → Summarize texts accurately → Cite textual evidence → Explain reasoning → Organize structured paragraphs → Produce mature written responses

This creates an integrated learning loop:
Read → Understand → Think → Organize → Express

Alignment with the Ontario Curriculum & EQAO

Our content connects seamlessly with school requirements while targeting the comprehensive competencies tested in EQAO evaluations.

We do not treat EQAO preparation as routine test drills.

Sustainable performance comes from accumulated core skills:

Reading Speed + Comprehension + Academic Vocabulary +Information Extraction + Inferential Analysis + Written Response

By embedding EQAO-aligned strategies into daily lessons, students achieve success in school assessments while building genuine, long-term language abilities.

Program Outcomes

Upon completing a course stage, students demonstrate tangible skill advancements:
Independent Reading: Greater autonomy in tackling complex English texts
Contextual Deduction: Proven strategies for analyzing unfamiliar words
Text Structure Mastery: Swift identification of main ideas and supporting details
Deeper Inference: Ability to read between the lines beyond surface details
Evidence-Based Reasoning: Skill in supporting answers with text evidence
Expanded Academic Vocabulary: Steady accumulation of high-level diction
Structured Writing: Well-organized summaries and short written responses
Clear Expression: Enhanced confidence in voicing personal perspectives
Increased Confidence: Reduced resistance to reading complex materials
Academic Preparation: A solid base for elementary, middle, and high school success

Beyond Grade Improvement: Building Lifelong Competency

A truly effective English program helps students become self-reliant learners rather than remaining dependent on teacher explanations.

As students advance, they master a transferable framework:

How to approach an unfamiliar passage independently
How to decipher the meaning of a new word
Where to locate evidence for a given question
How to articulate personal insights clearly and persuasively

This reflects the core mission of the Q-Learning's Reading & Vocabulary Program:

Read Independently. Think Critically. Express Confidently.
