Public Speaking & Debate (Grade 3–12)

Course Introduction

This course is designed to help students express themselves confidently, think logically, and persuade effectively, providing comprehensive development of English speaking and public speaking skills. The curriculum progresses from fundamental public speaking to advanced debate techniques, significantly enhancing students’ academic presentations and classroom performance, while fully preparing them for regional, provincial, and national speech and debate competitions .

Grade Levels:G3–G12
Language of Instruction: Full English
Teachers: Ontario Certified Teachers (OCT) with 20+ years of experience in English speech and debate instruction, having trained multiple provincial and national award-winning students.

Course Modules

  1. Public Speaking Foundation(G3–G6)
    • Voice, intonation, and pronunciation correction
    • Speech structure: opening – transition – conclusion
    • Overcoming stage fright and building confidence
    • Engaging the audience with stories and details
  2. Intermediate Speaking & Debate Introduction(G5–G8)
    • Constructing logical, clear, and persuasive arguments
    • Efficiently organizing speech content
    • Impromptu speaking and prepared speech practice
    • Introduction to mainstream debate formats (Parliamentary, Cross-Examination, etc.)
  3. Advanced Debate & Competition Preparation(G7–G12)
    • Strategies for argument construction and rebuttal in formal debates
    • Evidence- and data-based argumentation
    • Comprehensive preparation for English speech and debate competitions, including:
          • Peel Region Debate League
          • Ontario Student Debate Union (OSDU)
          • Toastmasters Youth Speaking Competitions
          • DECA and other academic speaking contests
